Told me this massive story about the work he needed to do, then got me to sign the quote. He then did 20 minutes work and did nothing he described then I felt obliged to pay the quote of $1190.
His reviews are fake.
I am going to small claims to get most of my money back. He didn't even provide a $1 flange to the garden tap he replaced to stop anything entering the property.
This would have had to be the most expensive non fix from this company.
$ 788.00 for one hours work to tell me I have a broken pipe. Then to tell me it was going to be $6500.00 fix. Had 2 qoutes to fix both plumbers were around $1500.00 to repair... feel absolutely robbed.
The plumber left and did not clean up his mess having to hose down the back of the house ... not a good look.
Charged $2000 for under 2 hours of work + more losses to go!
I think all these good reviews are fake unless the plumber has two different price lists: one for inexperienced blonds (like me) and the other one for the budget households… $2000 for under 2-hour work - cut a hole in the wall and change the little thing attached to the tub…Way overcharged! It feels like I've been robbed by Jake from Captivate Plumbing. I had a leaking tub. It was visible leaking only when the tub was on. I also had a few smaller plumbing jobs to be done around the bathroom. It was the first week after New Year and I didn’t have much time to look around and ask for some local references. I went on google and searched for a plumber near me - Captivate Plumbing came up and I called. The person on the phone (it was Jake himself I can tell now) said that there’s call our fee of about $89 payable for him to come and quote the job - I thought it’s reasonable as I’d never had a plumbing issue before and wasn’t aware about market prices for plumbing. Jake came in and quoted around $900 for swapping the shower to the new one and about the same $900 or so for checking and fixing a simple blockage in my bathroom sink. Then he said that that leak is definitely behind the wall and he’d need to cut out a piece of tiles and the wall to fix the system behind to stop leaking and it’s $1800 quote. Then he said it’s definitely leaking behind the wall and damaging the wall. Also, he said that I can get any handyman to fix the wall and replace cut tiles after he’s done. I got very worried about the fact that it’s damaging the wall and agreed to pay the price even tho I don’t have the money after moving the house and am in debt already. Also, to not get in trouble after a stupid blond like myself agreed to the work and finds out later that have been ripped off, he gives you a paper to sign and gets your signature everywhere… I know it was my mistake that I agreed to that but also I believe it’s not fair that I have to pay $89 for call our without knowing an approximate price list (and he has the price list in his iPad and shows it to prove that this is the official price). So Jake finished his job within less than 2 hours charging me just under $2000 and leaving me with the fixed tub sitting in this hole in the wall (see picture). Then I started looking for a handyman to repair and bumped into a few full-service guys who would’ve done both plumbing and wall repairs and they all quoted half of the price Jake charged me and they‘re shocked by the price I paid (attached).
Moreover, non of the handyman said they’d be able to fix it as per Jake’s because the cut damaged the waterproofing and I need to get the whole wall to be replaced with the new membrane and tiles. If I’d known I’d just not use the tab (because it wasn’t leaking when off) and could just get a few quotes for full repairs or even renovation. Now I’m left with $2000 hole in my budget and with the hole in the wall and bathroom I cannot use unless I find another $2-3K to repair and waterproof the wall.
Advice: do not use this company (actually it’s not even a company but looks like it - Jake is a sole trader with the good marketing and sales techniques). To change a shower tub will cost you about $900, to find a simple blockage another $900, if you have a leak behind the wall - starting from $1800… (2 hours of his work = 2 weeks of my working hours to earn this money…).
You’ll get a least half price for the same work and quality if you look elsewhere. Don’t waste your money unless you have tons of them and want to make a favor to a random plumber
I really hope that my review will save someone's time, mental health and a lot of money.
